What do you think of greyhounds?

I am with Greyhound Pets of America-Charleston and have noticed that many people have misconceived notions about greyhounds. Many people think they need lots of exercise, are bad with children, too skinny, ext... Why do you think of these dogs? And what lead you to that conclusion? I'd love for everyone to be informed about how wonderful greyhounds are, and for people to better understand their personalities. A lot of information can be found at

So what is your impression? And why do you feel that way? Would you like to be better informed about this breed?

I'm actually quite familiar with the breed, as I've done research on how original breed function affects the behavior and temperament of dogs today. I base a lot of my training on this, and it tends to work like a charm.

As for Greyhounds, specifically, the exercise portion is true ... but I suppose that all depends on what you consider to be "a lot of exercise". A good long walk twice a day is usually sufficient, but not everyone thinks that is "a lot" of exercise. I wouldn't say they're too skinny, but they are very lean dogs with a lot of toned muscles. Many Greyhounds are a bit nervous and even shy, but they tend to be rescued Greyhounds so I think that's more to do with upbringing rather than inherent temperament. Overall, I like Greyhounds quite a bit, and think they can be wonderful family pets as long as the children learn to treat the animal with respect and know their limits (this is true for ANY breed, of course).

The only trait that should be emphasized, I feel, more so than others is the Greyhounds breed function. Greyhounds are, by nature, predatory animals. They were bred to be independant sight-hunters. If ever allowed off-lead, disaster can occur. If a Greyhound catches sight of a small animal (rat, squirrel, cat, small dog, etc), it's natural instinct is to chase and kill it. And when Greyhounds are in stride, they all but lose their sense of hearing and will NOT stop chasing until it catches the prey. And you will never catch a Greyhound once it runs ... they run FAR faster than any human could ever hope to. That's something that any Greyhound owner must be aware of and cautious to!

PS - the myth about Greyhounds not being able to sit is just that ... a myth. Racing Greyhounds were not allowed to sit in the starting pens (as that might delay the quick start of the race) and often hot pokers were used to "discourage" a dog from sitting ... therefore, the fear Greyhounds seem to have about sitting is generally taught to them by the human cruelty they experienced at the racetrack.
