Is it wise for a religion to set the precedent that God will forgive your sins just by confessing?
This is what I don't understand about Christianity, you could be a big a bastard as you want but all of a sudden you can get an epiphany and all is forgiven. I mean even all the "wrong" religions believe that you are expected to suffer some retribution for your sins. The Eastern religions have to suffer through lifetimes of hardships because of kharma,and God wasn't exactly merciful with the Jews or Muslims who displeased him either.
Forgiveness is not obtained by simply confessing, you have to be sincere in your repentance and God can see the heart. Besides, it does not mean that being forgiven and free from punishment, you do not have to be cleansed or purified from your inclination to repeat the sin. In other words, you might have to suffer because of sin not for punishment but purification of the soul damaged by sin.
