concealed weapons permit & going on post?

i'm currently in the process of getting a concealed weapon's permit for a single pistol. my husband is deployed and i recently had someone try to break into our home, which is off post, so for my personal security as for the safety of my family i've chosen to buy a pistol, which i'd like to be able to carry on me if i feel the need to. i don't think i ever would, but say i left my pistol in my car along with the permit and drove on post. would this be considered illegal, even with the permit?
i've been trying to call the PPO all day, and i either get no answer or i'll get a "we'll have to return your call, ma'am". grr.
