If you are new to the car stereo market, you may find yourself overwhelmed at the sheer number of parts and accessories that can make up a top of the line car stereo system. In this article, we'll explore the basic components that make up a functioning car stereo system.

1. The Head Unit: Making It Happen

You may have seen the term "head unit" before and not known what exactly it was. Simply put the head unit is the part of your car stereo that actually produces the music from radio, tape, CD, or other device. But nowadays you can also get head units for your car stereo that can play DVDs or music and video from USB flash drives or memory cards. Head units have sure come a long ways from when people used to install home stereo equipment in their vehicles!

2. Amplifiers: Bring the Boom

While your head unit may provide its own internal amplification (which may be enough for you), at some point most car stereo enthusiasts will want to add amplifiers to the mix. Simply put, and amplifier takes a signal coming out of your head unit, and makes it louder. Be careful when shopping for amplifiers, as some of the large amps can draw over 100 amps; this may be well over what your alternator and battery can provide, and can cause damage to those components.

3. Speakers: Woofers, Tweeters, What?

The best head unit and amp is completely useless without speakers. Speakers, regardless of size, all do one thing: take the electrical signal coming from either the head unit's internal amp or your external amp and turn it into sound, usually loud sound. The different types of speakers are classified by the range of sounds they can reproduce. Tweeters, for example, only reproduce high pitches, while woofers reproduce the upper bass ranges. Midranges make midrange sounds, strangely enough, while subwoofers cover sounds from the low bass all the way down to subsonics (those sounds you can feel but not hear). Subwoofers are usually the first candidate for external amplifiers, since they require large amounts of current to make that bone shaking bass.

Putting It All Together

Let's review: head units take your CD or tape and convert it to electrical signals. The amplifier makes this signal larger, and finally the speakers take that signal and make sound out of it. These are the base components you need for any car stereo installation. The accessories, such as crossovers and signal isolators, may or may not be needed for your particular application.

These are the basics you need to know for all car stereo systems. Now that you have a better idea what all these different terms actually mean, you should be able to shop intelligently for your new car stereo system. Just remember, as always, while you get what you pay for, you don't necessarily have to have the absolute best (and most expensive) parts for a good sound. More often than not, a midrange product will provide the best bang for your buck. And remember, it's all modular! You don't HAVE to buy every piece all at once. You can start with the head unit, and simply wire it's built in amplifier into your factory car stereo speakers. Add a sub and an amp later if you want, or replace the factory speakers with higher quality ones, it's all up to you.

Car audio amplifiers, to a large extent, determine the final audio output of your car audio. Selecting a location for the amplifier is therefore of great importance. Select a location that has good air circulation. It could be in the trunk or under a seat. It is always recommended that you use cables with larger diameters like RCA cables to connect the low level output of the radio to the low level input of the amplifier. Just in case your radio does not have a low level output, you will have to use a high-level speaker output. This arrangement is not preferred by most because of the noticeable increase in sound distortion. This arrangement works best when your amplifier is meant for bass only.

Another thing to take care of is the connection between the power antenna lead from the back of the radio to the amplifier. One can go through the user manual to find out the recommended gauge size for getting the right power and ground cables. It is always recommended that you connect the ground power cables before the RCA cables, to avoid damage.

A good fuse should be a priority for the system. Check the owner's manual for the proper rating of the fuse. Another important thing to note while installing amplifiers is that to ensure that the power cables do not run next to the RCA signal cables. If the cables are too close, it may lead to unwanted noise. If you have noise you are not able to stop, try using a noise filter. It can cut down the noise to negligible levels. The gauge cables for the amplifier ground or negative and the amplifier battery or positive should be the same.

Try to place your amplifier on some solid piece of metal, either in the body or the frame of your car. This is an important process, because most of modern day cars are built with fiberglass and finding a good ground conductor is always that much more difficult.

Infrared saunas are getting fairly popular, both for their convenience and for their health benefits. However, they're not cheap. That's why building your own infrared sauna is an option that can help you get the benefits of an IR sauna without laying out a lot of cash. You don't even have to buy a kit. If you're just a little bit handy, you'll be able to create a sauna you can enjoy for a long time to come.

Before you get started building an infrared sauna, it's important to be sure you have the skills to do the job. You'll need some basic knowledge of carpentry, if you don't have a small enough room, and you'll have to know a little bit about electrical wiring. It's not a good idea to build a sauna yourself if you don't have these pieces of knowledge.

The first way you can set up an infrared sauna is using an existing small room. By placing two 500 Watt, 9 Amp infrared heaters in a small room, around 5'x10', you can get the feel of an infrared sauna. Be sure that your heaters don't have an overly high wattage if you use this methods (not more than 600 Watts.)

Place the heaters on either side of the room, around five to six feet apart. Make sure that you have a 20 Amp outlet available, or use an extension cord to split the load between a pair of 15 Amp outlets to avoid overloading the circuit. Make sure that any extension cords you use can handle your heaters' power requirements.

When preheating this kind of sauna, turn heaters towards a door or wall to improve the speed at which the heat accumulates. Don't put them too close to doors, walls or other objects, though. Otherwise, there's some danger of fire. This kinds of DIY sauna can take as long as an hour to heat up.

Once the room is heated, you can use it just like an ordinary sauna. If you're using a bathroom, be sure to account for the moisture usually present. However, you can use any small room. In addition to the heaters, you can also use a radiant 250 Watt infrared lamp, suspended from the ceiling. This can heat the room more quickly.

Instead of using heaters, you can also create a sauna heat source from three 250 Watt infrared lamps. You'll need three heavy duty lamp sockets, fifteen feet of heavy cord, a medium duty plug, and a switch or timer switch that can handle seven Amps of current. Mount the sockets on a sturdy board that's mounted around chest height if you're sitting.

If you don't have a room to use, you can build an enclosure from wood, or create one from pipes covered in blankets. Any small enclosure that's comfortable to sit in, and won't let heat escape will do. Be sure that there's space for lamps or heaters inside the sauna, and that you can run cords out to power them.

If you've got a few skills, it's not too hard to build your own DIY infrared sauna for a lot less than it would cost to buy one. This is a great way to enjoy the health benefits of a sauna on a budget, or to try out an infrared sauna before committing to the investment in a commercial sauna.

alright dude i had the same issue you need to check all your connections. the grounds make sure that they are touching raw metal if not get a grinder and grind off any paint or anything touching the metal. then make sure your running enough power. i had to install duel altenators to my truck with 0 guage wire. plus you want to souder all your connection. plus get some quality batteries like some optima yellow tops no less than two. what your doing is under powering the amp wich it is going to fry because its straining and starving for power so its trying to save itself. i have two 15" solo baric l7s in a custom box two yellow tops and two HO altenators and i have no dimming and no clipping. bro go on this website and this is the altenator setup you need. hope i helped...

Not at all, only problem is you might not be able to fit the wire into the connectors without crimp connectors. And it might be difficult to find a crimp connector that fits 4 gauge with a small enough spade tip. You could absolutely trim some of the strands at the connection so that it fits.
Does JL 300/2 mean 150 watts per channel or 600 watts total power?
300/12 = 25 amps which 10 gauge is sufficient. You can buy #10 thhn by the foot at home depot

(It's normally 200 dollars for a 500 foot roll at my supplier, so home depot probably divides that and then increases to 250 to 300% by the foot. So worst case you'd be looking at 1.10 per foot, but it's more likely 70 cents. You probably need 10 or 12 feet (battery positive to amp and ground from amp to body) So 12 dollars for the supply wire. Then at 300 watts to one bridged speaker, you would need more number 10 (and I forgot to mention, get stranded, not solid wire, low voltage has a drop from wire resistance, stranded is better for this) So in that case just make it 15 feet, and remember the shorter your speaker hook up the better.
If it's two 150 watt subs, then you only need #14 wire for those, which is significantly cheaper.
If the RMS wire didn't come with the amp, you only need #18 and an inline fuse holder for a 1 amp fuse. Then you need a 30 amp fuse and holder to go at the battery on the positive wire.
Total cost of materials should be around 20-25 dollars if you get it yourself. Most 4 gauge amp kits are 80 to 120 dollars. I can't imagine you getting this good of a deal...
And by the way, the best place to get cheap fuse holders for car installs is a private auto sound supply shop. I payed 1.60 for a clear one with set screw connectors for my 50 amp setup.

But yeah, to actually answer your question, yes larger wire is not a problem. You can use it.

If you're amp is 600 watts, then you need a 50 amp fuse and number 8 minimum.

Edit: to the second answerer. A fuse is not a resistive limiter.
The lead fuse is primarily for protecting against a short if the wire gets damaged and touches the body of the car. But also to prevent the wire from catching fire from too much current being pulled through it. The fuse that comes with the 4 gauge kit is fine for this situation.
The amplifier fuse is probably easier to come by. And will protect the amp just fine on it's own.

Use the 4 AWG, bigger is better here. The fuse should be no more than 18" from the battery. Keep the ground as short as possible. If not bolting the ground to an existing bolt scrape away the paint first. Know what's on the other side of the hole before you drill. Use lock nut and a star washer.

The main fuse rating shouldn't be much higher than the sum of the fuses on the amp(s). Equal is best.
