I’ve been selling car audio amplifiers online for over a decade now. Through the years, the single most often asked question is “how do I select an amplifier for my new speakers or subwoofer?”

LetÂ’s try to de-mystify this selection process if we can. This information is presented to help the online-shopper make reasonable decisions. It is geared toward the published information that is generally available in most product descriptions on the web. LetÂ’s face the facts, if you have been in the line of car audio for years and have completed several installs, you know what you are looking for. But many, if not most online shoppers are not that familiar with the finer points of car amplifier installations.

Many, who are new to car audio will first look for “US made” as a stamp of high quality. Although that might have been true when I first started out decades ago, it certainly isn’t a serious guideline anymore. Honestly speaking, even some of the most famous named amps, associated with good old American production are in reality developed and manufactured in the Far East today. You will be very hard pressed to find any car audio products made in the USA today. In addition if you do find that one out of fifty brands that might be assembled in the USA, you’ll choke at the price.

Most shoppers will purchase their speakers or subwoofers first and then go shopping for an amplifier. So youÂ’ll have the recommended specifics in hand (for your speakers) as you start your amplifier search. This is definitely the suggested order if you desire to find a proper match.

Usually shoppers will immediately look at the power output of an amplifier first. When considering the power, you should also consider the maximum impedance specified by the amp. Most classic amplifiers by the likes of Nakamichi, Alpine, Linear Power, Orion, Precision Power, Eclipse, and US Amps will be capable of 2 ohm and even 1 ohm operation in the case of class D subwoofer amps. This is nothing but an advertising ploy to make the shopper think he is getting more power for his dollar spent. We want to compare the continuous output of an amp since it is a much better method of comparison and represents how your amp will be used.

The second subject to check is the “signal to noise ration” (SNR) of an amplifier. Obviously the higher this ratio, the better it is. Although this is not particularly important if searching for a subwoofer amp, it certainly should be a deciding factor in purchasing a good amp to drive your mids and tweeters.

The above two points will enable a shopper to match an amp to his new speakers but there are several other more general points to consider also. One such point is: does your car radio or source unit have a low-level output connection? This allows you to connect directly to the standard low-level inputs on your amp. If your head unit isnÂ’t so equipped, youÂ’ll need an amplifier with a high-level input. This high-level input enables you to connect your speaker wires from your head unit directly to the amp. There are adapters available if your selected amp doesnÂ’t have this feature, so donÂ’t let this point rule out an otherwise acceptable amplifier.

You should also consider your physical location for your install before shopping. Be sure you can secure your amp properly and that the location provides enough air circulation. DonÂ’t forget to measure the installation area to ensure you purchase an amplifier that will fit. DonÂ’t laugh, IÂ’ve had more then a few customers over the years forget this basic requirement until it was too late.

If your amp will power two sets of speakers such as a component set in front and a coaxial or mids in the rear, I would recommend purchasing a four channel amp instead of a stereo amp. This will give you full fader control which will not be available if you split one stereo channel for two sets of speakers, front and rear. Sometimes your local installers will suggest going with multiple amps instead. Could the reason be that they desire to sell another amp and set of installation parts?

Another option to look for is built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers. Finally, be sure your amp has a gain control. This is necessary to properly match your vehicle sound levels to your speakers when installed in your specific vehicle. This also allows you to purchase an amplifier that might be a bit larger or more powerful then your speakers with a view to expanding your system in the future. Going along with this thought, if purchasing a multi-channel amplifier, you should consider one capable of running at 2 ohms in case you ever decide to add a subwoofer at a later date. Spending a few dollars more up front can save you in the long run.

I’ve been selling car audio amplifiers online for over a decade now. Through the years, the single most often asked question is “how do I select an amplifier for my new speakers or subwoofer?”

LetÂ’s try to de-mystify this selection process if we can. This information is presented to help the online-shopper make reasonable decisions. It is geared toward the published information that is generally available in most product descriptions on the web. LetÂ’s face the facts, if you have been in the line of car audio for years and have completed several installs, you know what you are looking for. But many, if not most online shoppers are not that familiar with the finer points of car amplifier installations.

Many, who are new to car audio will first look for “US made” as a stamp of high quality. Although that might have been true when I first started out decades ago, it certainly isn’t a serious guideline anymore. Honestly speaking, even some of the most famous named amps, associated with good old American production are in reality developed and manufactured in the Far East today. You will be very hard pressed to find any car audio products made in the USA today. In addition if you do find that one out of fifty brands that might be assembled in the USA, you’ll choke at the price.

Most shoppers will purchase their speakers or subwoofers first and then go shopping for an amplifier. So youÂ’ll have the recommended specifics in hand (for your speakers) as you start your amplifier search. This is definitely the suggested order if you desire to find a proper match.

Usually shoppers will immediately look at the power output of an amplifier first. When considering the power, you should also consider the maximum impedance specified by the amp. Most classic amplifiers by the likes of Nakamichi, Alpine, Linear Power, Orion, Precision Power, Eclipse, and US Amps will be capable of 2 ohm and even 1 ohm operation in the case of class D subwoofer amps. But in the real world, you should compare the ampÂ’s output capability at 4 ohms. In the majority of installs, you will be building a 4 ohm setup. At one time, the names mentioned above and most other quality amps would only publish their specific output at RMS or continuous power ratings and never the maximum output. Unfortunately, due to the changing market place, almost all amplifier manufacturers publish the maximum output of their amps. Beware of this since it can be most misleading. Lets be honest, who cares what an amplifier can produce for a period of 1 millisecond? Published maximum output is really very misleading and near worthless to the installer. This is nothing but an advertising ploy to make the shopper think he is getting more power for his dollar spent. We want to compare the continuous output of an amp since it is a much better method of comparison and represents how your amp will be used.

The second subject to check is the “signal to noise ration” (SNR) of an amplifier. Obviously the higher this ratio, the better it is. Although this is not particularly important if searching for a subwoofer amp, it certainly should be a deciding factor in purchasing a good amp to drive your mids and tweeters.

The above two points will enable a shopper to match an amp to his new speakers but there are several other more general points to consider also. One such point is: does your car radio or source unit have a low-level output connection? This allows you to connect directly to the standard low-level inputs on your amp. If your head unit isnÂ’t so equipped, youÂ’ll need an amplifier with a high-level input. This high-level input enables you to connect your speaker wires from your head unit directly to the amp. There are adapters available if your selected amp doesnÂ’t have this feature, so donÂ’t let this point rule out an otherwise acceptable amplifier.

You should also consider your physical location for your install before shopping. Be sure you can secure your amp properly and that the location provides enough air circulation. DonÂ’t forget to measure the installation area to ensure you purchase an amplifier that will fit. DonÂ’t laugh, IÂ’ve had more then a few customers over the years forget this basic requirement until it was too late.

If your amp will power two sets of speakers such as a component set in front and a coaxial or mids in the rear, I would recommend purchasing a four channel amp instead of a stereo amp. This will give you full fader control which will not be available if you split one stereo channel for two sets of speakers, front and rear. Sometimes your local installers will suggest going with multiple amps instead. Could the reason be that they desire to sell another amp and set of installation parts?

Another option to look for is built-in low-pass and high-pass crossovers. Finally, be sure your amp has a gain control. This is necessary to properly match your vehicle sound levels to your speakers when installed in your specific vehicle. This also allows you to purchase an amplifier that might be a bit larger or more powerful then your speakers with a view to expanding your system in the future. Going along with this thought, if purchasing a multi-channel amplifier, you should consider one capable of running at 2 ohms in case you ever decide to add a subwoofer at a later date. Spending a few dollars more up front can save you in the long run.

Hopefully these few points will enable you to select an amplifier to properly power your new speakers or subwoofer.

Yes in fact this is true but I think they are inflating the price a bit. One way to tell if it is in fact true...is to put the key into the ignition cylinder (DO NOT turn the car on or the key on...just stick the key in) open the drivers side door and see where the beeping will come from. If the beeps are coming from somewhere in the dash...you are ok and don't need that harness and you should be able to use a standard GM interface harness to install your new deck. However...If the beeps are coming from the drivers side front speaker...you NEED the harness they told you about to retain the beeping function (for your headlights-are-on beeps, key-in-cylinder beeps, etc.) If any of my customers got into an accident after I did the install, and the airbags never deployed when they should've and somehow they trace it back to me...I'd probably somehow end up being liable for damages/injuries.

If I am not mistaken...you don't truly NEED the beeps to function like stock...but I NEVER did a head-pop on those vehicles without that correct harness to take myself out of the liability.

normally dimming lights and power loss are due to a bad battery or alternator (or both). Try upgrading the 'big three' and see if that helps. Use 0 gauge amplifier wire if you can (stock is usually 4 gauge). The big 3 are: Alt+ to Battery+, Battery - to Chassis, and Engine ground to chassis.

Other than that, it may just be HOW you installed the stereo, because if it only loses power when the engine revs down, then its an alternator problem, seeing as how you said you're alternator's new, you may have to take it to a professional if the big 3 doesnt help.

And for an amplifier thats 75$ and puts out 600 watts rms, try MA Audio, They are solid competition brand. I have their 1200 watt rms amp and it is pushing some 12's up to 144 decibals just to clarify that they are good. =)

There generally are two differing kinds of car DVD player setups available these days. Original equipment makers or OEM players come with the cars right from the factory while aftermarket players can be bought in a number of different ways and then installed in the automobile. Many of these new DVD players feature navigation capabilities, too. There is a question that many folks are asking, what's GPS and why are GPS DVD car players so good?

For people that don't know, GPS stands for world Positioning System. Many miles overhead, out in space, there are a number of satellites specifically dedicated to beam down location info to devices fitted out to read those beams. DVD car players equipped with GPS navigation systems can pick up those signals, which are translated into easy-to-read maps and such like and which can keep someone that is basically directionally-challenged from getting lost while going down to the neighborhood shop for a gallon of milk. All kidding aside, GPS is a way to literally go from one's stoop in Hartford,Connecticut and take the fastest route to another person's stoop out in San Diego, California.

Many GPS-equipped DVD car players will be able to point out places of interest, the least expensive gasoline and the best hotels or motels along the way. The convenience they offer cannot be overstated. Literally, the sorts of devices that can work with GPS nowadays is almost endless. Even the least expensive cell telephones around can be supplied with GPS capability. There are a number of very inexpensive GPS devices on the market that can be hooked into a power outlet in a car, too though someone who's heavy about their automobile will need to have their DVD car player supplied with GPS.

Car DVD players are glorious pieces of gear. They fundamentally are really strong computers, for absence of a better method of explaining what they can do. They sometimes have a Windows-based processor chip and a decent quantity of computer memory to handle all of their tasks. They also make for great platforms for a GPS system, which is easily included in even the least expensive auto DVD player nowadays. Keep in mind, that GPS in a car DVD player likely works better when the player itself is what's called a dual zone, rather than a single sector DVD player.

That's because the player is in a position to better separate functions into different zones, keeping spillover from those functions from interfering with the GPS receiver in the automobile DVD player. They seem to be far better than those car DVD players without GPS, and only cost a very small sum of money more. In the end, when one is going to install a player in their car, why not go for the full-boat and make sure it has GPS? It'll come in terribly handy.

The home theater receiver or AV receiver, as some would term it, is the central unit of your home theater system. Without it, all your other components would probably not be able to deliver. The receiver receives input so you won't have to purchase components such as the Preamp, Tuner and multi-channel amplifier, separately to give output.

The receiver typically does what the Preamp, Tuner and multi-channel amplifier do and certainly not by compromising quality. You will still be looking at the same quality if you had purchased all three components individually, but one thing's for sure, you definitely save quite a bit with buying just a receiver to do the job.

For those who are mindful of their budget and expenditure, a receiver would certainly serve them well. On the other hand, for those who have the capacity to and wish to splurge thousands on their home theater system, are certainly free to buy each component separately.

So what should you be looking out for in a home theater receiver?

Between a wireless receiver and a regular one, there are differences and you are sure to see the pros and cons with each one. Hence, you will need to find out as much as you can about them before you head out to the nearest electronics store, shopping for a receiver.

Also, when it comes to wattage, do not allow yourself to be fooled by the numbers on the side of the receiver box. Though watts are important, it is always true that a receiver with a higher wattage indicates more power and better sound quality. You will then have to consider other factors such as the distortion factor, which means the louder the decibels, the less clearly you can hear what's being played.

A receiver is built to work together with the other components in your home theater system and you will be certain to want good and clear sound from the receiver you are about to spend hardearned money on. Therefore, be sure to consider the signal to noise ratio, instead of just the wattage. The signal to noise ratio allows you to compare the signal to the background noise.

You will also want to pay attention to a receiver's ability to decode the latest audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio which are the best sounding audio codecs now. Before you spend any money on a home theater receiver, do your homework. Check product reviews and make sure that you're getting the best your money can buy. Make sure you take the time to check out how the receiver handles before you buy.
