How do I get rid of Diesel on my clothes?

I'm from the Army and a recent maintenance of an old tank got me entirely drenched (and I mean it, I'm totally soaked after removing the drain plugs and puppet valves). I tried washing it twice in the washing machine and it still smells of diesel and still feels very oily.

And to make it worse, it's not just my uniform, my friends' ones got tainted too after mixing in the same load as mine, not to mention the washing machine which now smells like a diesel drum.

Any suggestions on how to wash the diesel off my clothes? Not just the smell but the greasiness as well. And what do I do with the washing machine?

*p.s. and I do get occasionally stained by general purpose grease and other engine/brake/hydraulic oils like SAE 10/40, DOT 4 and Aeroshell 4. They are usually small patches which I ignore but I could do with a little help on removing them if anyone knows a thing or two =)
